Another A–Z Challenge has come and gone. All too often, life and its various excuses stand between us and our dreams. I love this challenge simply because it forces me to do what I always dreamed of doing: drawing. I pretty much draw 26 pieces a year, and yet, every year I see vast improvements over the previous years. Imagine what I could accomplish if I practiced more often. My ultimate goal is to produce a comic book/web comic based on my Tales from the Crimson Empire short stories (among others). For that, I really need to concentrate on drawing more humans, clothes, and armor. So for 2024, I am going to concentrate on drawing the Races and Classes of D&D, rather than the Monster Manual. I also hope to produce at least two pieces a month (hopefully one or more a week, but am keeping expectations low). My secondary goal of this challenge was to encourage people who claim they can’t draw to try. I show a step-by-step progression of each drawing, sometimes using exaggerated geometric shapes, to show people that it really isn’t that difficult. We are all our own harshest critics. And I can assure you, unless you are a savant, your first few efforts will not be your best. I encourage you to purchase a sketchbook. That way you will be able to look back and see the progression of your skills. Seriously, if I can do it, anyone can. Don’t ever let anyone, especially yourself, tell you otherwise. |
