Beneath the city of Waterdeep, a beholder crime lord keeps tabs on everyone and everything—or so the beholder believes. Known as Xanathar, the leader of Xanathar’s Thieves’ Guild believes it can gather information on everything in the multiverse. With an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, a taste for gold, and a general disdain for most living things, it is surprising to learn that Xanathar’s most prized possession is its goldfish, Sylgar. Xanathar resembled a typical beholder, having a large spherical body some 4.5 feet (1.4 meters) in diameter, with ten eyestalks and a large central eye, above a wide fang-filled mouth. His chitinous hide was colored a dark blue-gray and shaded to a dull yellow-orange around his mouth and on his underside. He normally floated 3 feet (0.9 meters) above the ground. —D&D Beyond Well, D&D stumped me again. Couldn't find a race, class, or spell that begins with"X". So I went with D&D's most famous named Beholder: Xanathar. One of the most famous and unforgettable monsters in D&D, this horrible floating head has an anti-magic central eye with 10 eyestalks that shoot various deadly beams. If that's not bad enough, it has a gaping maw filled with sharp teeth. Five in-progress pictures below. |
Why you should practice drawing Beholders: Giant floating heads are another staple in any fantasy or sci-fi genres. Whether a physical giant head, a head on a monitor, or a hologram, Giant floating heads just scream major evil threat. Besides you can never have too much practice drawing close-ups of heads, which is what this mammoth monstrosity essentially is.
