My characters name is Melkor and he is a revenant ranger. But he wasn't always like that, he was a human who had a wife name Lilliana and two sons named Mairon the eldest and Talion the youngest.
Melkor possessed a particular skill set as a human ranger. He was a particularly deadly ranger who fought in countless wars. His ability with a bow was unparalleled, as well as his ability with his blade. His region however fell deep into the Crimson Empires territory so when they came into their power his region was part their reign. Now Melkor was smart and hid his wife and children away from the empire. However the region was taken over by a powerful necromancer by the name of Mikaeus who worshiped the God Vecna, who upon hearing of Melkor's reputation sought him out. Melkor, not wanting to be killed and leave his wife and kids, joined Mikaeus until he found a way to get out of the Crimson empires territory.
Melkor joined a group called the Hand of Mikaeus which was an elite group of 5 people of different classes that served Mikaeus and the God Vecna. He joined to protect his wife and children. Unfortunately to prove his loyalty he had to prove himself to their evil God which involved a ritual that left a heavy mark on Melkor as a servant of Vecna. He did some nasty/dark work with the hand becoming the most lethal of the 5. He fought among them , he slept among them, he ate among them but he was never one of them. Melkor used a variety of methods to kill. He Wore very dark clothing and carried with him his bow and sword and knew how to use them well. But after a very long time of this work he said enough was enough and that he was going to escape the Crimson empire with his family. But as Melkor was a servant of Vecna, Vecna saw this as a betrayal and intervened and told the necromancer in the form of a vision. Then the most terrible day in Melkors life happened. Melkor was taken to the chambers of Mikaeus where his wife Lilliana and one of his sons, his eldest, Marion were being held down by other members of the Hand. But where was his youngest? Did he somehow escape? They made no mention of the boy. This gave Melkor some hope. Until the worse happened. His wife and son were killed in front of him. Massacred is a better word for it. After witnessing this, the necromancer took his blade and slit the throat of Melkor sending him into the void of nothingness and the cold embrace of death.
But then something amazing happened. Moments after death Melkor had a vision of some sort. And the raven queen spoke to him saying that his task was not done that he must be bought back to avenge his family's death, find his son, and kill all worshipers of Vecna and the unnatural undead that he produces. In a gasp of breath Melkor woke up in a strange cemetery he's never seen before. He has changed. In a nearby glass he sees that his skin is pale, his eyes are glowing blue, his hair is black, and his hands are claw like. He has changed into a revenant, a servant of the raven queen bought back. He remembers everything and is out for blood. Looking through the cemetery he finds a mask which he wears now to conceal his identity and cover up the fact that he isn't technically alive and he goes on his way to find civilization and a place to start his hunt. But he realizes that time has passed.
A long long time has passed and the Crimson empire has been defeated once but there are rumors of their return. That is perfect. After some wandering he sees the call of champions and decides that's a perfect way to start his search. Which is where he finds himself now. But what he doesn't know yet is that Vecna and the raven queen are fighting for his soul so sometimes the influence of Vecna might come out in him (will make for some cool interactions). Some other things to know is since he saw the necromancers power he hates the undead and necromancers. He wears black worn leather armor and a dark black worn cloak. He also wears an expressionless mask to hide the fact that he is a revenant and his identity. He carried with him a one handed sword for open battles and a longbow for taking out enemies. As for the raven queen his relationship with her is more of an alliance type thing than worshiping her as a deity.
